First Dance

Ladies! I come to you to ask a very important question.  Adam and I are not dancers. In fact we both find it awkward and uncomfortable, we both have 2 left feet and a lack of rhythm, (especially in front of 200 plus guests at our wedding) so finding a song to dance to for our first dance has been... Difficult. At this point I think we'd both be more comfortable just doing away with the first dance all together.

Is that totally horrible? Would it be the worst wedding ever if the bride and groom didn't have a "first dance" and jumped straight into the party after dinner & cake?

  1. J and I did the eighth grade style of dancing. we just swayed back and forth to the music lol -- we talked the entire song too. Is that an option?
I don't think it would be horrible if you just skip it =) It is YOUR reception -- so it is completely up to y'all =) and anyone who knows you (ie your guests) will understand!

  2. I say just do the normal dancing you would do. Holding each other and swaying or whatever. That is what most people do.

  3. We didn't do a first dance at our reception. Honestly, we kind of forgot about it! We had a TON of out of town guests and we felt it was more important to see them. :)

  4. My hubs and I had a slow song we danced to and just swayed back and forth. (we are both not good dancers at all!! ) In my opinion, I don't think it would be terrible for ya'll not to have a dance, but I think it's one part of the night in the midst of the busy-ness of your wedding to spend with your new husband and soak the day/night all in. It was a very special time for my husband and I... :)

  5. I think the first dance is a great opportunity for you and the hubs to just enjoy each other and breathe. You could just sway back and forth and look at each other and take it all in. BUT... if you guys don't want to do the first dance, then don't! It's your day, and no one should make you feel like you HAVE to do it! :)

  6. Just pick a really short song! :)
My husband and I aren't good dancers and don't like to be the center of attention, so my husband came up with the idea to have our slideshow in the background while we were dancing. It took the pressure off and people could either watch us or the pictures.

  7. Totally not at ALL a bad idea. Who says you have to follow EVERY wedding tradition there is out there... do exactly what YOU guys want and what makes you feel comfortable! It's your guys' special day!

  8. I learned while planning my wedding, that people will always tell you what you "should" do, but I decided against a lot of the more traditional reception activities, and our wedding still turned out great. But as for our first dance, we kinda just did the sway back and forth thing to our song, nothing fancy. I love dancing of all types, but hubs isn't into it, so he decided he would be ok with just swaying left to right, haha.

  10. It's fine if you decide not to, but the "pick a short song" idea and "just sway back and forth in one place" idea are also totally viable. Have you considered taking just 2 or 3 private classes with someone to help you out? I think it might actually be a fun project to work on!

  11. i'm a new follower and i think that it is perfectly fine if you skip the first dance. even just jumping in with a fast song and having the dj invite everyone to the dance floor might be a good option for you too. whatever you do though..it'll be great :)

  12. I think since it's your wedding you shouldn't do anything you feel uncomfortable doing. I've been to several weddings where there was no garter toss or no champagne toast or cutting of the cake and I never thought to myself "Hmm..that's weird". You want to make your wedding everything YOU want it to be-don't let what other people think get in the way of that! :) Weddings these days are so non-traditional that it doesn't really matter!

  13. You do what you're comfortable with! My sister just got married in November and they aren't big dancers and didn't do a first dance or father/daughter son/mother dances. I don't even think the guests noticed!

  14. You can do whatever you want, it's your wedding!! We aren't great dancers either, so I am going to look up some local classes... I think it might be kinda fun to try something new like that together!

  15. I think you should do whatever you're comfortable with! It's you're wedding and if the first dance won't be fun for you, then give it the boot! Our first dance wasn't anything too exciting. I mean it wasn't bad, but I don't think I would have necessarily missed it had we decided not to do it :)
